The Best of Friends® is an innovative social skills workshop for children aged 5 to 11 years. This brief activity-based session encourages children to make to most of their friendships by developing good communication and social skills while recognising the difference between friends and ‘frenemies.’ Participants learn how to form and develop good friendships and conversation while developing skills in managing or avoiding conflict with their peers.
The Best of Friends social skills workshop covers:
- Making friends
- Social expectations
- The importance of compromise
- Empathy in friendship
- Peacemaking
Developed in the clinical setting over a 15 year period by Child psychologist Dr Kimberley O’Brien, this social skills workshop is highly acclaimed by parents, teachers, health and educational professionals as a means of improving social skills and preventing conflict. The material incorporates extensive research through Monash University relating to the transition from primary to secondary school.
Each session is evaluated to ensure that it meets our strict learning outcomes. Current research with parents indicates that 70% of children attending the program improved (overall) their social skills while 90% of parents identified at least one to 3 areas of improvement (n = 147).
